I was trained in <a href=\"https:\/\/math.mit.edu\/\"><strong>Mathematics<\/strong> (Course 18)<\/a> at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, I was trained by Prof. Richard M. Daly and Dr. David Altshuler. There, I had the privilege to work on <em>Genome Wide Association Studies<\/em>, i.e. studies that try to link genetic variants\/mutations in the genome to diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-1024x442.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-1024x442.png 1024w, https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-768x332.png 768w, https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-1536x663.png 1536w, https:\/\/mrivas.su.domains\/gbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3-2048x884.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>GWAS of a disease. On the x-axis is the position of the genetic variant in the genome. Y-axis the corresponding -log10(P value) for the variant after testing for association.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I obtained my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndm.ox.ac.uk\/study\/student-profiles\/manuel-a-rivas\">DPhil (PhD)<\/a><\/strong> in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford. I was a Clarendon Scholar, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Osler\">Osler Award <\/a>winner, and supervised by Prof. Mark McCarthy and Prof. Peter Donnelly.
